Sherfane Rutherford starred with the bat and West Indies' bowling attack delivered to seal a 30-run victory over England at the T20 World Cup.

Wednesday's contest in Mumbai will likely be crucial in determining who finishes top of Group C, and the Windies gave themselves a great chance as they excelled with both bat and ball.

Rutherford, who later suffered an apparent wrist injury while fielding, was the star performer, as his unbeaten 76 from 42 balls propelled West Indies to 196-6.

West Indies had been put on the back foot when they lost Brandon King (1) and Shai Hope (0) early on. Shimron Hetmyer (23) got them going, but his stand was ended by Jamie Overton (2-33).

But with support from Roston Chase (34), Rovman Powell (14) and Jason Holder (33), Rutherford marshalled the Windies' innings superbly to put up a highly competitive target.

England's chase started well, with Phil Salt reaching 30 before he was dismissed in the fourth over. Jos Buttler (21) got a start before he succumbed to Chase (2-29), but a sluggish middle section proved costly for Brendon McCullum's team.

As the runs slowed, Gudakesh Motie (3-33) struck with the ball, sending Tom Banton (2), Jacob Bethell (33) and Harry Brook (17) packing.

Sam Curran's unbeaten 43 gave England a glimmer of hope, but the tail batters failed to back him up as the Windies claimed a confidence-boosting victory with an over to spare.

Data Debrief: Buttler just short of landmark

A frustrating day for England was summed up, perhaps, by Buttler coming up three runs short of a significant milestone.

Buttler, who is the all-time record holder for England appearances across all formats, is now on 3,997 runs in the shortest format. He is aiming to become just the fourth player to score 4,000+ runs in T20Is, after Babar Azam, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

The day, though, belonged to the Windies, who snapped England's run of seven straight T20I wins on foreign soil.

West Indies have also taken their head-to-head record against England at the T20 World Cup to six victories and two defeats.
