England confirmed their progression from Group C at the T20 World Cup with a 24-run defeat of Italy.

Justin Mosca (43) and Ben Manenti (60) made a good fist of a huge run chase for the World Cup debutants, but Harry Brook's side ultimately reached the Super 8s despite again having to overcome some nervous moments.

England were not at their best with the bat, with Jos Buttler (3) dismissed in the third over before Phil Salt (28) and Jacob Bethell (23) both failed to build on decent starts.

There were nerves when captain Brook fell on 14 to leave England at 92-4, but while Crishan Kalugamage (2-41) did for Tom Banton (30) and Sam Curran (25), Will Jacks' superb, 22-ball unbeaten 53 steered England into a commanding position at 202-7.

Italy's chase started in disastrous fashion, with Jofra Archer (2-35) dismissing Anthony Mosca and JJ Smuts for ducks in the first over.

Harry Manenti (12) offered some brief resistance before he was sent packing by Jamie Overton (3-18), but it was the Italy captain's brother who stole the show.

Ben Manenti struck 10 boundaries, including six maximums, as he and Justin Mosca set about putting the pressure on with a 92-run stand.

Jacks (1-34) finally ended Manenti's effort in the 12th over, and after Justin Mosca fell to Adil Rashid, Sam Curran (3-22) then dismissed Marcus Campopiano (2) and Gian-Piero Meade (0) with successive balls.

Grant Stewart's 45, which saw him smash five maximums, gave Italy renewed hope, yet Curran struck again as part of a pivotal penultimate over before Overton bowled Ali Hasan with the final ball.

Data Debrief: Italy go out with plenty of pride

As expected, England and West Indies have progressed from Group C, but Italy can certainly hold their heads up high.

Italy showed plenty of grit in this performance, with Ben Manenti and Justin Mosca's partnership marking the highest fourth-wicket stand in their T20I history.

Stewart, meanwhile, has now scored 520 T20I runs, becoming just the second Italy player - after Anthony Mosca (554) to surpass the 500 mark.

England, on the other hand, actually picked up just their second win from five meetings against European teams at the T20 World Cup. In fact, before beating Scotland on Saturday, they had lost all of their previous three such contests.
