India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav says the squad's depth gives him welcome selection dilemmas ahead of every match as they prepare to face Australia.

The teams face off in the first T20I in Canberra on Wednesday, with further matches in Melbourne, Hobart, the Gold Coast and Brisbane to follow.

India have won their last three T20I series against Australia, including a 2-1 win in their last series away from home in December 2020.

Australia, though, are in fantastic form. They are unbeaten in their last eight T20I series (W7 D1), their longest unbeaten streak ever in the format.

India were recently beaten in a three-match ODI series Down Under, but with Jasprit Bumrah headlining a swathe of additions to their 20-over squad, Suryakumar is confident of a better showing.

"It's a good headache to have so many options; fast bowlers or spinners," Suryakumar said. "From the top to number seven, everyone is flexible; anyone can bat anywhere.

"It is a little difficult during squad selection, but in this team, the atmosphere is such that everyone knows that the goal is to win.

"If we want to win the match, then never mind the combination.

"Even if someone has done well in the last two matches, but he does not fit the combination for the next game – for example, if we want to play an extra spinner or play an all-rounder instead of a fast bowler – the player understands. We have reached that situation."

India's spinners have a collective bowling average of 14.7 in men's T20Is since the start of 2025, better than any other Test-playing country.

How they fare against Australia's batters could be crucial, given Australia have a collective strike rate of 157.9 against spinners this year, the highest of any Test-playing country.

But Suryakumar expects the pace of Bumrah, who was rested for the 50-over series, to have a major impact in the early stages.

"As you saw in the Asia Cup, he took the responsibility of bowling two overs minimum in the powerplay," Suryakumar said of Bumrah.

"It is good that he is raising his hand. It is going to be a good challenge against the Aussie team in the powerplay.

"The way he has played his cricket for the last so many years, he has kept himself right on top, and he knows how to prepare for a good series.

"He knows how to come and play cricket here. I think he has visited this country the most of all the guys. So all of them have spoken to him. He is very open and very helpful with that."
