South Africa rip through India for stunning success on day three
South Africa claimed their first Test win in India for 15 years as the hosts capitulated to a mere 93 runs in their chase of 124 on the third day at Eden Gardens.
India resumed on Sunday as overwhelming favourites for victory in the first of two Tests, with the Proteas at 93-7 in their second innings and the hosts still to bat again.
But India were rocked by the news that captain Shubman Gill was ruled out for the remainder of the match after leaving with a neck injury on day two, and that was just the start of their woes.
South Africa reached 135 runs before losing their next wicket, with Corbin Bosch falling to Jasprit Bumrah for 25. Captain Temba Bavuma continued to plug away, though he got a slice of fortune when he survived an lbw appeal while on 54 runs – he would finish unbeaten on 55.
Mohammed Siraj sent stumps flying to remove Simon Harmer (7) then finished off the tourists' innings when he trapped Keshav Maharaj lbw for a duck, ending with figures of 2-2.
A total of 26 wickets fell in the first two days on a treacherous surface in Kolkata, and more of the same was to come in India's second innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) was caught behind by Kyle Verreynne four balls in, a loss that effectively left India 0-2 due to Gill's inability to bat.
And they were effectively 1-3 when Marco Jansen again combined with Verreynne to remove KL Rahul (1). Washington Sundar (31) and Dhruv Durel (13) offered some resistance either side of lunch, but the latter then handed Bosch the simplest of catches at deep midwicket.
Harmer then took centre-stage, catching Risabh Pant (2) off his own bowling and trapping both Ravindra Jadeja (18) and Kuldeep Yadav (1) lbw as the assault continued.

Simon Harmer delivered an incredible return at Eden Gardens, earning him Player of the Match honours.

Axar Patel's 26 was India's only other meaningful score, but both he and Siraj (0) fell to Markram off successive balls to finish off the contest and leave the home fans stunned.
Data Debrief: Bavuma still unbeaten as India collapse
Most of those present at Eden Gardens will have arrived expecting to witness a result on day three, but few could have expected it to go the way of the tourists.
India's failure to reach 124 runs was the second-lowest unsuccessful chase in Test cricket in Asia, after Australia fell short of a 107 target against India in Mumbai, in 2004.
It was also India's second-lowest unsuccessful chase overall, after they failed to make 120 against West Indies in Bridgetown back in 1997.
The result means Bavuma is still unbeaten as South Africa's Test skipper, having overseen 10 victories and one draw from 11 matches in charge of the world champions.
