Jannik Sinner believes the Monte-Carlo Masters will not "define who's number one or number two" between himself and Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz is the current ATP world number one and has occupied that spot since his US Open triumph last year, but Sinner could reclaim first place in Monaco.

After becoming just the eighth male to win the Sunshine Double, Sinner can become world number one if he wins the Monte-Carlo Masters crown next week.

The Italian won at both Indian Wells and Miami without dropping a set; since the Miami Open’s inauguration in 1985, Sinner is the first male or female player to achieve the Sunshine Double without conceding a set.

The Monte-Carlo Masters, where Alcaraz is the reigning champion, marks the start of the European clay swing, with events in Madrid and Rome preceding the French Open.

Sinner believes the number of important tournaments on the horizon means the result in Monte-Carlo will not completely define his battle with Alcaraz.

"We did a lot of work in Indian Wells, and obviously the work continues," Sinner said.

"It’s a different surface, we all know that it’s a bit more physical on clay, but last year I played some good tennis on this surface, so let’s see what’s coming this year.

"I know the position, the situation and the scenarios, but it’s not one tournament that will define who’s number one or number two.

"It’s a tournament that I love to play, and I’m happy to be here. I will try to win as many matches as possible, but at the same time, there are even more tournaments coming up.

"When you are a top player, you aim to win trophies. The points come regardless, in a way.

"I watch the [PIF ATP Live] Race To Turin, because there you can see how someone is playing during the year."
