Jannik Sinner reached the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters for the first time after earning a straight-sets win over Francisco Cerundolo on Thursday.

The Italian, who is keeping his hopes of reclaiming the world number one spot alive, took just one hour and 26 minutes to get his 7-5 6-1 victory over the line.

Sinner struggled at times in the opening set, moving tentatively on his right leg, but without calling for a medical timeout.

He took the early advantage as the pair traded breaks, though Cerundolo stayed equal to him until the final game, when Sinner broke his serve to convert his first set-point attempt.

The number two seed then had to stand his ground in a 10-minute game early in the second set to get another vital break on his second attempt, having defended three game points.

He did not look back from there, with Cerundolo only winning one more game, and Sinner comfortably served out the match to set up a meeting with Ben Shelton in the last eight.

Daniil Medvedev is also through to the quarter-finals, earning a comeback win over Lorenzo Sonego to make it through.

Having lost the first set, Medvedev rallied to a 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory in two hours and 41 minutes, reaching the last eight of a competition for the 13th time this season – only Carlos Alcaraz (also 13) has achieved that feat.

Data Debrief: Sinner collects the set

Sinner has now won each of his last 23 indoor matches, and this victory helped him secure a new accolade.

He is the first Italian to reach the quarter-finals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 events – he has previously won at Miami, Canada, Cincinnati and Shanghai.

Sinner has also equalled Alcaraz (18) for the most quarter-finals reached at ATP Masters 1000 events among players born since 2000.
