Singapore Grand Prix: 'The rest of the year is my Sunday' – Norris inspired by Ryder Cup comeback bid
Lando Norris is taking inspiration from the United States almost recovering to win the Ryder Cup last week, as he looks to chase down Oscar Piastri and win the Formula One driver's championship.
Norris enters this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix 25 points adrift of championship leader Piastri, though his form has dipped recently.
After winning three of four races between Austria and Hungary over the summer, Norris has failed to win any of the last three, not even making the podium in the Netherlands or Azerbaijan.
With seven races remaining in the 2025 season, Norris is taking heart from the fight Team USA showed in last week's 15-13 defeat to Europe at Bethpage Black.
Europe took the largest-ever lead into the Sunday singles, only for the USA to force a nervous finish by winning 8 ½ points on the final day, with Europe only just getting over the line.
Norris told Sky Sports: "You can never say never, right? Last weekend was a really good example of don't give up until you know it's over.
"I think America proved, after a good battering on Friday and Saturday, what they can still do, what they can still achieve. It was very close to them almost winning.
"I guess it's a similar situation in terms of, they had seven hours left or a day left, and for me we've still got seven races, we've got the sprints. There's still so much opportunity and 20 points or whatever it is, it's not a lot.
"I've already fought back a little bit after the DNF and the loss of 18 points in the Netherlands which is a bit of maybe a Friday or a Saturday day for the US... and now the rest of the year is my Sunday.
"I need to try and play catch-up and come back through, but there's no point in giving up until the very end, so that's what I've got to do."
Norris is not the only driver eyeing a late-season fightback, with Max Verstappen winning the last two races to pull within 44 points of the top two.
However, with 69 points still separating the Dutchman from Piastri, he said in his post-race press conference in Baku that he does not "rely on hope".
"There are seven races to go and it's still 69 points, it's a lot," Verstappen told Sky Sports.
"Basically, everything needs to go perfect from my side and then a bit of luck from their side I need as well. So it's still very tough."
DRIVERS TO WATCH
McLaren – Lando Norris
Norris won the last edition of the Singapore Grand Prix in 2024, and he and could become the first driver to repeat victory at Marina Bay since Lewis Hamilton in 2017 and 2018.
It would also be the first time the Brit has managed repeat victories at any grand prix, with each of his nine previous wins arriving at different tracks.
Norris has set the fastest lap on six occasions in 2025, and if he does so once more, it will be his best year by this metric in F1 (also six in 2024). Only 11 drivers have previously achieved seven or more of the fastest laps in a year in the competition.
McLaren only need 14 points in Sunday's race to secure the constructors' championship crown.
It would be the British team's 10th title, a figure only previously achieved by Ferrari in the history of F1 (16 titles for the Scuderia).
With six races remaining, they could also equal the earliest title win for a team in the competition, after Red Bull's dominant 2023 success.
Red Bull – Max Verstappen
Verstappen may have left it a little too late to push for a fifth consecutive world title, but if he maintains his form from the last two races, he could make things uncomfortable for the McLaren duo of Piastri and Norris.
The Dutchman has secured pole position and victory at each of the last two grands prix (Italy and Azerbaijan), and he could now achieve that double in three consecutive races in the same year for the first time since 2023 (a run of five between Monaco and Great Britain).
Verstappen has achieved 46 pole positions in his F1 career, all with Red Bull. If he achieves one more, he will have the third-most poles for a single team in F1 history, surpassing Ayrton Senna's tally of 46 with McLaren.
The poleman has won three of the last six Singapore races, including each of the last two (Carlos Sainz in 2023 and Norris in 2024), but that is after seven of the previous nine went the way of the driver on pole.
