Scottie Scheffler said he was always confident he would return to winning ways after storming to an eight-shot victory at the St. Jude Championship.

Scheffler had gone 16 events without a win since triumphing at the Desert Classic in his first outing of 2026, with that streak including four second-place finishes at the Masters, the RBC Heritage, the Cadillac Championship and the Travelers Championship.

But he ended that run in fine fashion on Sunday, finishing comfortably clear of Kim Si-woo to win the event for the very first time.

Scheffler finished at 17-under for the tournament, with Kim at nine under and Sam Burns tying Sweden's Alex Noren one shot further back.

Scheffler never truly wavered throughout his four-under fourth round, with a third-hole bogey being his only blip as he mixed in five birdies.

"It's not easy to win out here. I felt like this year... the year I've had just shows how difficult it is," Scheffler said afterwards.

"I felt that a week like this was coming. It was nice to come out this week and play some solid golf and really execute when I needed to.

"This is a course where that's really what it comes down to. There are a lot of holes where there's not even a correct miss.

"It's just a matter of stepping up there and hitting really good shots."

While Scheffler ended his wait for a win, it was a difficult few days for Rory McIlroy, who finished 66th on his first competitive outing since tying for 40th at The Open Championship last month.

And the Northern Irishman knows he must improve dramatically if he is to have any chance of winning a record-extending fourth FedEx Cup later this month.

"I'm so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance. I've just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit," McIlroy said.

"Obviously, didn't come in here with a ton of reps. It almost felt like the more the week went on, the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit.

"I guess it was nice to shake the rust off a little bit, but I'm going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete."
