Elena Rybakina has reached the Canadian Open showpiece after defeating Coco Gauff in the semi-finals.

The world number two recovered from losing the opening set to eventually win 5-7 6-2 6-2 in just over two hours in Toronto.

Gauff survived an early scare as she saved three break points in the opening game, and the American made the most of her reprieve as she converted a break point in the 12th game to win the first set.

Rybakina, however, was far more clinical in the second as she strung together a five-game winning streak, during which she capitalised on both of her break point opportunities, to force a decider.

And the third set followed suit as Gauff struggled on serve, committing three double-faults and giving away six break points, with Rybakina clinching victory with her first match point.

"It was again a very tough battle," Rybakina told the press after her win. "I'm happy that it went my way once more.

"She served really well the first set. It was pretty close the first one, and then I feel like on my serve I rushed a little bit in the end.

"I knew that I need to start straight away the second set well. I'm happy that I did couple good returns, and then things turned around.

"She also started to feel a bit of pressure, some double-faults. I just kept on going, and I'm happy that I won."

Rybakina will face Iga Swiatek in the final after the Pole defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3 1-6 6-3 to book her place in the showpiece.

Rybakina shows more grit in Toronto

Following her win over Gauff, Rybakina is now one of four players in the Open Era to claim four three-set wins en route to the final at the Canadian Open, after Lina Krasnoroutskaya (2003), Venus Williams (2014) and Bianca Andreescu (2019).

Rybakina has hit 536 winners off the ground (excluding aces) at WTA-1000 events this season - only Aryna Sabalenka (549) has hit more winners in total this season.

This was also her 26th Tour win on hard courts this season, more than any other player (Sabalenka and Svitolina both on 25).

Swiatek, meanwhile, has claimed three WTA top-20 wins at a single event for the first time since claiming tournament victory at Roland Garros in 2024 (Marketa Vondrousova, Gauff, Jasmine Paolini).

Swiatek has also reached a 14th WTA-1000 final from 47 main draws entered; since the format’s introduction in 2009, Swiatek (29.8%, 14/47) trails only Serena Williams (38.3%) and Maria Sharapova (32.0%) for rate of finals reached.
