Coco Gauff needed just one hour and 14 minutes to reach the Canadian Open quarter-finals as she swept aside qualifier Alina Korneeva in straight sets. 

Korneeva had already beaten Emma Navarro and Iva Jovic on her way to the last 16, but she was unable to beat another American player as Gauff romped to a 6-3 6-1 win.

The fourth seed will now face either Alexandra Eala or Belinda Bencic for a spot in the semi-finals.

Both Gauff and Korneeva struggled to hold on serve in the first set, with five breaks taking place over the first seven games in an enthralling opening in Toronto. 

Gauff missed two set points in the eighth game as Korneeva tried to take the set into a decider, but the American made no mistake on serve to put herself into an early lead. 

At the start of the second set, Gauff and Korneeva again traded breaks, but from that point on, the two-time grand slam champion was able to showcase her class. 

She raced through the final five games with the minimum of fuss, sealing her progression at the second time of asking, having been able to save three game points herself.

Gauff back into Toronto quarters with another stylish display

Having fallen short of a maiden Wimbledon title last month, Gauff has come back with a vengeance in Toronto as she returned to the quarter-finals of the Canadian event for the first time since 2023 without really having to break a sweat. 

And in doing so, Gauff is the first player to reach 20 quarter-finals in hard-court Tier I/WTA-1000 events before the age of 23. It is also the 35th time she has reached a quarter-final at WTA-1000 events, while also achieving her fourth last-eight appearance at the Canadian Open. 

In fact, since the start of the 2020 season, only Iga Swiatek (135) and Aryna Sabalenka (125) have claimed more WTA-1000 main draw match wins than Gauff's 116, and she will be out to add to that tally in Canada.
