Rafael Jodar is into his first ATP Masters 1000-level semi-final after defeating Arthur Fils in straight sets.

Tuesday's semi-final was suspended due to rain in Montreal, but once play resumed, Jodar wrapped up another exceptional victory.

The Spaniard triumphed 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, setting up a semi-final showdown with Brandon Nakashima, who beat Luciano Darderi.

Jodar raced into a 4-1 lead in the opening set, immediately applying the pressure on Fils.

Yet the Frenchman fought back, winning three straight games to drag himself level.

Jodar, however, recovered his composure in the tie-break, clinching the lead with a third set point.

An exchange of breaks early in the second set saw the scores level at 2-2, but 19-year-old Jodar once again kept his cool in the latter stages.

Fils saved three match points, but a sublime cross-court forehand winner sent Jodar into the last four.

Spain's latest breakout star

With Carlos Alcaraz still absent from the ATP Tour, Jodar is taking the limelight and flying the flag for Spain.

The teenager is now up to 11 in the live world rankings, and is now one win away from a Masters 1000 final.

Jodar is just the fifth teenager in the Open Era to reach at least the semi-finals of the Washington Open and Canadian Open in the same season, after Boris Becker (1987), Michael Chang (1990), Andy Murray (2006) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (2018).

Taylor Fritz did for Jodar in the American capital, but this new star seems destined for big things.
