Alexandra Eala's run at the Canadian Open was halted by Belinda Bencic in the round of 16 on Sunday, but Naomi Osaka produced another strong display to reach the quarter-finals.

Coming off the back of her first WTA Tour title in Washington, Eala had provoked more fanfare with her results in Toronto, but 12th seed Bencic proved too good for her.

Bencic – who won the Canadian Open back in 2015 – earned a dominant 6-4 6-0 victory to end Eala's seven-match winning streak.

The first set contained five breaks of serve but, after the last of those went Bencic's way in game nine, she stormed through the remainder of the contest without dropping a game.

Bencic only committed five unforced errors all match, her fewest in a single WTA 1000-level outing this year.

Curiously, the 29-year-old has now won 10 consecutive matches against left-handed players dating back to 2024, and she feels there may be a technical reason for that.

"I feel like it can't be coincidental, I don't think. It's weird for me as well, because I really hate playing lefties and it's just not comfortable – the entire match you are uncomfortable," she said.

"Maybe I feel like, because I have good timing, I'm able to switch. That's the only thing I can think of, because I really don't like playing them." 

Bencic will now face fourth seed Coco Gauff in the last eight, following the American's earlier victory over Alina Korneeva.

And there will also be a headline clash between Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka, after the latter dumped home favourite Leylah Fernandez out with a 6-4 6-4 win.

The duo exchanged breaks in games three and four of the opening set, but Osaka did not give anything up on serve from that moment on – with both sets ultimately decided by breaks in the seventh game.

"It's a big confidence boost, but I'm the type of person who's just happy to play more and more matches," Osaka said afterwards. 

"Coming back after pregnancy, I was really eager to play the best players, and now I'm able to play them and go toe-to-toe. So, I'm just really happy about that."

Osaka extends quarter-final streak

Osaka has now reached at least the quarter-finals at four straight WTA Tour events, also doing so at Washington (semis), Wimbledon (quarters) and Bad Homburg (runner-up).

It is the first time she has enjoyed such a run since 2021, when she was still ranked in the world's top 10 and reached the last eight at the 2020 US Open, then Gippsland, the Australian Open and Miami after the turn of the year.

Osaka has conceded only 17 games at this year's Canadian Open so far – her fewest en route to a WTA-1000 quarter-final since the 2021 Miami Open (16).

And, since the start of the grass swing in June, only two players have claimed more WTA-level match wins than Osaka's 13 – Barbora Krejcikova (15) and Eala (14).
