England captain Harry Brook described Jos Buttler's exploits as "ridiculous" after he made T20 history in a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka, which clinched the series with a game to spare.

Having triumphed by 119 runs in Tuesday's opening T20I in Southampton, England only needed 12.1 overs to chase down a target of 146 in the second match in Cardiff.

Liam Dawson posted figures of 3-32 while Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton took two wickets apiece to help restrict Sri Lanka's struggling batters to 145-9, with opener Pathum Nissanka (37) registering the tourists' highest score.

Tom Banton's unbeaten 52, off just 24 deliveries, helped England ease over the line for the loss of just four wickets, while Brook was caught for 23 off Wanindu Hasaranga's bowling as he fell 26 runs short of Tilak Varma's record of 336 T20I runs without being dismissed.

There was a landmark achievement for Buttler, though, as his score of 30 made him the first player to ever score 15,000 runs across all T20 competitions – he is now one run ahead of Kieron Pollard (14,999).

Asked about Buttler's longevity after the match, Brook told Sky Sports: "It's ridiculous. Long may it continue! 

"He has been phenomenal for 15 years and he's someone you want by your side and in the changing room."

England will look to seal a series sweep at Old Trafford on Saturday, before the first of three ODIs takes place next Tuesday.

Reflecting on England's overall display, Brook said: "Tonight was a special performance, very clinical. Sri Lanka got off to a flier but the way we fought back with the ball was outstanding.

"The way Dawson reads the game was outstanding, too. He is an awesome bowler and a great bloke. He uses all his nous.

"Everyone bowled phenomenally and the way Banton hits different parts of the ground with the bat was great to see."
