Harry Brook described England's T20I win over Sri Lanka as "near perfect" after they cruised to a 119-run victory in Southampton.

England's white-ball captain Brook was at the heart of the victory, scoring an unbeaten 114 off just 49 balls to kick off the three-match series.

Jos Buttler also smashed 80 off 44 deliveries as England posted a total of 254-4, and Sri Lanka never looked like getting close to their target, as they were eventually bowled out for 135.

Dunith Wellalage's 33 was their top score, while all six England bowlers picked up at least one wicket – Sonny Baker led the way with three.

Brook's career-best 114 also included the second-fastest T20I century for England (42 balls), behind Phil Salt's 39-ball ton against South Africa last year.

Buttler (4,292), meanwhile, has surpassed Rohit Sharma (4,231) for the second-most runs in men's T20Is. Only Babar Azam (4,596) has scored more in the shortest format.

Brook praised his side's performance, especially after a short turnaround from their Test series against Pakistan.

"Exceptional performance and very proud how the boys went about it," said Brook after the win.

"It's not the ideal schedule, if the Test had gone all the way we'd have had one day. But it finished early and we could get down.

"Every time we get a decent score, Jos is there as well. He's always been amazing, and it feels like he's hit his straps again.

"We spoke about running twos, I think we had 22 out there tonight, so it's phenomenal.

"Communication was amazing. If we're being ultra critical, we can get a few more runs or take more early wickets. But it was near perfect."

The second match of the series will take place in Cardiff on Thursday, before the final game at Old Trafford on Saturday.
