Pelicans fire coach Green after 2-10 start
The New Orleans Pelicans have fired head coach Willie Green just 12 games into his fifth season, the team announced on Saturday.
The Pelicans fell to 2-10 after Friday's 118-104 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, their fourth consecutive defeat.
James Borrego, who has head coaching experience with the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets, will take over as New Orleans' interim coach.
Green was 150-190 as coach of the Pelicans with two playoff appearances. Since the start of last season, however, New Orleans is 23-71.
"After careful evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to make a change at head coach," Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said in a statement.
"I have the utmost respect for Willie Green, and I'm sincerely appreciative of his contributions to the Pelicans organization and the New Orleans community. We wish him and his family all the best in the future."

There was some hope that a fitter Zion Williamson could help lead the Pelicans to a renaissance this season, but Williamson has been limited to just five games due to foot and hamstring injuries.
Dumars has been scrutinised for his draft-day trade to acquire rookie Derik Queen, as the Pelicans' future draft assets have become a notable subplot.
While Queen has been solid, averaging 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds, the Pelicans sent an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks in the deal, creating urgency for New Orleans to make the playoffs.
With the 2-10 start among the worst in the NBA, Dumars' staff is hoping to avoid the embarrassment of that pick becoming a high lottery pick in a lauded draft class.
