Jessica Pegula has booked her place in the Washington Open semi-finals with a straight-sets win over Anna Kalinskaya.

The home favourite won 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 16 minutes to set up a last-four tie with either Diana Shnaider or Liudmila Samsonova.

It was a straightforward first set for Pegula, who broke ahead in the fourth game before holding serve for the remainder of the set.

And the second threatened to be just as easy for Pegula, who broke to love in the third game, but Kalinskaya levelled at 5-5 as her counterpart served for the match.

Nevertheless, Pegula converted a break point in the very next game before clinching victory with her first match point.

On the other side of the draw, Naomi Osaka came from a set down to defeat Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the quarter-finals.

Osaka won 4-6 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 16 minutes, with either Alex Eala or Elina Svitolina up next in the last four.

Pegula continues building momentum on familiar territory

Pegula has now reached the semi-finals of the Washington Open for a third time, while her first-ever Tour win also came at this event back in 2019.

It was a clinical display from the 32-year-old, who won 80% of her first-serve points and recorded six aces, while Kalinskaya was left to regret her five double-faults in the contest.

Pegula has now won six of her seven Tour matches against Kalinskaya, though this was the first time either player had won in straight sets.

Osaka, meanwhile, is through to her first Washington semi-final, while she moves to 2-0 against Cocciaretto on the Tour.
