The San Antonio Spurs held off the charging Timberwolves in the second half and overcame a career-high 55 points from Minnesota star Anthony Edwards to pull out a 126-123 victory Saturday in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Western Conference.

Minnesota (27-16) took a one-point lead after the first quarter before San Antonio (29-13) outscored the Timberwolves 48-22 in the second to take a comfortable advantage into half-time.

The Timberwolves came roaring back and went ahead 119-118 on Donte DiVincenzo’s 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining in the game, but the Southwest Division-leading Spurs scored the next five points before holding on.

Victor Wembanyama had 39 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio, while Edwards shot 19 of 33 from the field and 9 of 16 from three-point range to surpass his previous career best of 53 points set last January against the Detroit Pistons.

The Spurs increased their lead in the Southwest to 3 ½ games over the Houston Rockets and handed the Timberwolves their second straight defeat following a stretch of six wins in seven contests.

Thunder fall to Heat, lose Jalen Williams

The Oklahoma City Thunder lost All-Star Jalen Williams to injury and had their five-game winning streak snapped with a 122-120 defeat to the Miami Heat.

Williams, who missed the defending NBA champion Thunder’s first 19 games this season following wrist surgery, left with thigh soreness after playing just 14 minutes.

A first-time All-Star in 2024-25, Williams has averaged 16.8 points, 5.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 24 games since making his season debut in late November.

Reigning league MVP and NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 39 points for Oklahoma City (35-8).

Miami (22-20) trailed by one before pulling out the win on Andrew Wiggins’ three-pointer with 31 seconds left in the contest.

The Heat got 30 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and a career-high six three-pointers from Bam Adebayo to move within 1 ½ games of the first-place Orlando Magic in the Southeast Division.

Streaking Nuggets get past lowly Wizards

The Denver Nuggets used a late fourth-quarter surge by Jamal Murray to defeat the lowly Washington Wizards 121-115 and extend their winning streak to four games.

Denver (29-13) and Washington (10-31) were tied at 110-all with 2:33 to go in the contest before Murray scored the next seven points of the game to give the Nuggets breathing room with just under a minute remaining.

Murray poured in 42 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a season-best 30 for the Nuggets, who won for the seventh time in 10 games since three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic went down with a hyperextended left knee.

Kyshawn George had 29 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three blocks in the Wizards’ sixth consecutive loss.
