The Memphis Grizzlies will be without Zach Edey much longer than initially expected.

The Grizzlies announced Wednesday that Edey will be re-evaluated in six weeks while rehabbing from a stress reaction in his left ankle that has kept him out since December 7.

"Based on the unanimous recommendation of consulting experts, Edey will continue on his current plan of offloading and rehabilitation, with a reevaluation to follow in approximately six weeks," the team said in a statement.

When he was first injured, the team said he would be sidelined at least one month.

Now he will be out until late February or early March.

Edey's injury is to the same ankle he had surgery on in June, forcing him to miss the season's first 13 games.

Since making his season debut on November 15, he had played in all 11 Memphis games, averaging 13.6 points with team highs of 11.1 rebounds and 1.91 blocked shots and had been on a hot streak just before getting hurt. In the six games prior to his injury, he was averaging 16.5 points and 14.0 boards with the Grizzlies winning five times.

Memphis, who are currently in Berlin to face the Orlando Magic on Thursday, is 7-4 in games he plays, compared to 10-18 in games he does not.

A sprained left ankle also forced Edey to miss 12 games last season, but he went on to average 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds and earn All-Rookie first team honours.
