Magic tab Spurs assistant Sweeney as next head coach
San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney is finalising a deal to become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic, multiple media outlets reported on Friday.
Sweeney, 41, beat out more experienced and more well-known candidates like Billy Donovan and Jeff Van Gundy in the race to fill the seat left empty when the Magic fired Jamahl Mosley earlier this month.
Sweeney is expected to remain with the Spurs through the end of their season, with Game 7 of the Western Conference finals scheduled for Saturday night.
Sweeney spent two seasons as a video coordinator and the last 13 years as an NBA assistant coach for various teams, learning under Avery Johnson, PJ Carlesimo and Jason Kidd, among others.
Before this season, Sweeney was named San Antonio’s associate head coach under Mitch Johnson.
Sweeney will be responsible for helping a Magic team take the next steps after their development has seemingly stalled with three consecutive first-round playoff exits.
Last offseason, Orlando made a splash by adding Desmond Bane to a core of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, but the results were largely the same.
The Magic opened the playoffs by building a 3-1 lead over the top-seeded Detroit Pistons but were bounced after losing three straight games, with an average margin of defeat of 14.3 points.
Sweeney has been known more for his defensive prowess but will be tasked with helping the Magic improve on both ends of the court in the deepening Eastern Conference.
