Mitchell Marsh's first Indian Premier League century ended Lucknow Super Giants' losing run and dealt table-topping Gujarat Titans a potentially damaging defeat.

Thursday's 33-run victory came too late for LSG after four straight defeats had ended their play-off hopes, but it could yet have a significant say in how the remainder of the season pans out.

While the Titans lead the standings, they are just two points ahead of fourth-placed Mumbai Indians and could fall into the eliminator.

They paid the price for allowing Mitchell to dominate the first innings of this match, scoring 117 from just 64 balls as LSG registered an imperious 235-2.

The Titans have the batting talent to threaten such a target, yet Sai Sudharsan (21), Shubman Gill (35) and Jos Buttler (33) were all gone inside the first 10 overs.

A flurry of late wickets then ensured Gujarat fell well short on 202-9 as Will O'Rourke led the way for LSG with figures of 3-27.

Titans need a victory in their final match against Chennai Super Kings now to be assured of a top-two finish.

Data debrief: Marsh sets standard in battle of openers

Marsh's previous career-best IPL score had come back in 2022 for Delhi Capitals, scoring 89 off 62 balls, and there was little hint of that first century coming at the start of this match.

LSG were steady but unspectacular through the powerplay, scoring 53 without loss but with Aiden Markram doing the heavy hitting, scoring 28 to Marsh's 22.

However, Titans lost control of the contest as Marsh moved through the gears, making hay when Rashid Khan came into the attack as he was sent for 25 in the 12th over.

It took until the 19th over for Arshad Khan to belatedly snare Marsh, and the Titans' top order could not then follow his lead. Sudharsan, Gill and Buttler were out after 9.3 overs, the earliest all three wickets have been lost in 2025.
