Alexandra Eala claimed her first WTA Tour-level title in supreme style as she overwhelmed Jessica Pegula in a delayed Washington Open final.

Pegula was a set up, albeit with Eala leading 2-1 in the second, when play was suspended due to bad weather in the U.S. capital on Sunday.

Yet when the final resumed on Monday, youngster Eala made her mark emphatically, cruising to a 4-6 6-4 6-0 triumph to cement her place as one of the sport's biggest rising stars.

A nip-and-tuck second set after the resumption saw each player hold serve before Eala made the decisive breakthrough to restore parity.

Eala lost to Maya Joint at Eastbourne last year in her only previous Tour-level final, but the Filipina had the full momentum here as she swatted Pegula aside with a remarkable third-set bagel.

The 21-year-old raced into a 5-0 lead at breakneck speed, much to the delight of the crowd.

And 2019 Washington Open champion Pegula could find no way back as Eala set herself up with three match points.

Pegula pulled one back, but a rash forehand from the American saw Eala wrap up a resounding victory.

Eala breaks new ground

Pegula was aiming to become the third player this season, after Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva, to win three WTA-level titles, yet this was Eala's day.

Eala got the job done in stunning fashion, as she became the first Filipina or Filipino to win a Tour-level singles crown.

She has now won her last five matches against top-10 players, downing Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina (twice), Iga Swiatek and Pegula.

This was her seventh top-10 win of 2026, and this rising star now has a title to go with her immense potential.
