Taylor Fritz said he had to play "crazy tennis" to reach the Eastbourne semi-finals after earning two wins in one day against Joao Fonseca and Marcos Giron.

Fritz's second-round meeting with Fonseca was suspended on Wednesday due to darkness, with the match resuming 24 hours later with the pair locked at a set apiece.

Defending champion Fritz took the first set 6-3, but Fonseca hit back to win the second 7-6 (7-5). The American then won the deciding set 7-5 to advance to the next round.

Just hours later, Fritz returned to the court and was pushed to the brink by compatriot Giron after suffering a mid-match wobble to put his title defence at risk.

But the top seed eventually prevailed against the world number 46, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 to book a semi-final date with Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Friday.

"I've been here so many years. I love this tournament and I love the way it feels to play here," said record three-time champion Fritz.

"I've been very lucky all those years I won the tournament to not play in very windy conditions.

"It's tough for me when I don't get to play the tennis I love to play, and I have to scrap and play crazy tennis."

Davidovich Fokina booked his place in the final four with a straight-sets triumph over third seed Jakub Mensik in a match that was affected by the blustery conditions on court.

The almost-two-hour battle saw Davidovich Fokina emerge a 6-4 7-5 victor, becoming the first Spaniard to reach the semi-finals at Eastbourne since Feliciano Lopez in 2014.

Elsewhere, Ugo Humbert and Jenson Brooksby put an end to British hopes in Eastbourne by beating Billy Harris and Daniel Evans, respectively, to reach the semi-finals.

Fourth seed Humbert delivered a clinical display to down Harris 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 to reach his 20th ATP Tour semi-final.

Brooksby, meanwhile, became the fourth lucky loser to reach the last four in tournament history with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Evans.
