Joao Fonseca will take on Alexander Zverev in his maiden ATP Masters 1000-level quarter-final.

Fonseca broke new ground on Thursday at the Monte-Carlo Masters, booking his place in the last eight of an event at this level for the first time.

The Brazilian teenager beat Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-2, a day on from the Italian's exceptional 6-0 6-0 defeat of Daniil Medvedev.

Fonseca is making his debut in Monaco, and next up will take on third seed Zverev, who dispatched Zizou Bergs 6-2 7-5 in a tussle that lasted almost two hours.

The first three games of the opening set saw as many breaks, with Zverev nosing himself ahead and then getting the better of Bergs' serve again to take complete control.

Zverev was made to work in the second set, with Bergs breaking to draw level at 5-5.

But an immediate response from Zverev teed up the German to serve out the win at the second time of asking.

Data Debrief: Fonseca making his mark

Fonseca (19 years and 227 days) is the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals at the Monte-Carlo Masters since Rafael Nadal (18y 312d) in 2005.

He is the second man born in 2006 to reach the last eight of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, after Martin Landaluce, who reached that stage at the Miami Open last month.

In fact, since the format's introduction in 1990, Fonseca has become just the second South American teenager to reach an ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final, after Guillermo Coria (Monte-Carlo 2001).

On the other hand, Zverev is into his 14th Masters 1000 quarter-final on clay. Only Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and David Ferrer have featured in more such matches.
