Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the franchise, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.

Had there not been an extension, Curry would have become a free agent next summer, opening the door for speculation about his future.

Curry became eligible for an extension of up to two years and $136.7 million last month. The Warriors gave him several options, including max money, slightly smaller pay cuts or the ability to wait and decide later, depending on what the front office could eventually generate with extra flexibility.

Curry, 38, has spent his entire 17-year career with Golden State since he was drafted seventh overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Curry’s new contract takes him through 2029 – which would be his 20th season. If he plays that 20th year, he would join Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas, the late Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Udonis Haslem of Miami as the only players in NBA history to play 20 or more seasons with one franchise.

A 12-time All-Star and two-time NBA MVP, Curry was limited to 43 games last season because of persistent pain and swelling in his right knee. His 30.9 minutes per game were the third-lowest total of his career, but he still averaged 26.6 points and 4.7 assists.

Widely regarded as the greatest shooter in NBA history, Curry is the all-time league leader in 3-point field goals with 4, 248, and he ranks 19th all-time in points.

The Warriors begin practice next week in Hawaii and open the regular season on Oct. 21 in Los Angeles against the Lakers.
