Carlos Alcaraz held his nerve to save two match points against Taylor Fritz and secure an important Laver Cup win after a tough day for Team Europe.

On Friday, Team Europe dominated, with Casper Ruud and Rafael Jodar both winning their singles matches before Alcaraz teamed up with Jakub Mensik to beat Alexander Bublik and Fritz in the doubles.

Brandon Nakashima was the only winner for Team World on day one, but Learner Tien beat Flavio Cobolli before Alex De Minaur stunned US Open champion Alexander Zverev by saving a match point, turning the tide on Saturday.

Since the event's inception in 2017, only Roger Federer (6-0) has played more singles matches at the Laver Cup than De Minaur (4-0) without losing.

Alcaraz ensured Team Europe pulled level at 5-5 in the final singles match-up of the day, securing a 6-3 4-6 13-11 victory in one hour and 51 minutes.

After cruising through the first set, Alcaraz was penned back in the second, with a tie-break needed to split the pair.

The Spaniard then saw two match points go begging from 9-7 up before Fritz wasted two of his own, and Alcaraz reeled off the final three points to get over the line.

Alcaraz (10) is the second player to earn 10+ points in singles at the Laver Cup after the first five matches at this event, after Federer (12).

Team Europe then built on that result to finish the day with a straight-sets win in the doubles match, meaning they lead 7-5 heading into the final day.

Ruud and Zverev survived a second-set scare, but ultimately came out on top with a 6-4 7-6 (9-7) victory over Bublik and Nakashima, saving a set point along the way.
