Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse highlighted rookie VJ Edgecombe’s poise as an “incredible quality” after his game winner against the Memphis Grizzlies.

With just 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime, Edgecombe scored the crucial bucket from beyond the arc to give the 76ers a 139-136 victory on Tuesday.

Edgecombe finished the game with 25 points, making five of his 10 attempts from three, six rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block.

Nurse believes the composure and calmness shown by the third pick of the 2025 NBA draft is a great sign for the future.

“It's a big shot,” Nurse said. “Obviously, a game winner for a rookie is pretty cool.”

“He's kind of like that all the time. I never see him show much emotion. I think it's an incredible quality. He just plays the game.”

Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid both scored 34 points in the win, while Paul George also contributed with 17 points as the 76ers moved to 17-14 in the season.

Although it seemed like Maxey was going to take the final shot of overtime, a double-team on the guard meant that Edgecombe was open for the three.

The rookie was glad to repay his team-mates for the faith they put in him, though admitting he took his shot earlier than he planned.

“To be honest, I was actually trying to go when the buzzer [went] off, but it was a little bit too early,” Edgecombe said. “But it went in, and that's all that matters.”

“My teammates have faith in us to make a play, and that's what happened.”
