Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler suffered a torn right ACL in Monday's 135-112 win over the Miami Heat and will miss the rest of the NBA season.

The severity of the injury was reported on Tuesday by Shams Charania of ESPN.

The injury occurred early in the third quarter, when Butler jumped to catch a pass and landed awkwardly on his right leg after colliding with Miami's Davion Mitchell.

He stayed down on the court, grimacing and holding his right knee, before being helped by teammates Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga off the floor and into the locker room. The Warriors announced he would not return and undergo an MRI.

This is the third significant injury to the same knee for Butler, who sustained a meniscus tear in 2018 and an MCL sprain in 2024.

Butler's injury leaves a Golden State team fighting for a play-off spot in a tough position.

The Warriors acquired Butler last February as part of a five-team trade that sent Andrew Wiggins to the Heat, and are currently in eighth place in the Western Conference at 25-19. However, they are still very much in the mix in the Pacific Division, as they sit just 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Lakers.

Butler, who had 17 points, four assists and three rebounds in 21 minutes before getting injured, is second on Golden State in scoring at 20.0 points per game behind Stephen Curry's average of 27.4 points. The Warriors are 13-8 when he reaches his scoring average, but 12-11 when he scores 19 or fewer and in games he does not play.

Butler is also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists while shooting 51.9 per cent from the field and 37.6 per cent on 3-pointers.

A six-time All-Star and a five-time All-NBA selection, Butler has averages of 18.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists over his 15-year NBA career.
