Jannik Sinner won his 29th consecutive ATP Masters 1000 match after defeating Sebastian Ofner in straight sets at the Italian Open.

The world number one triumphed 6-3 6-4 in 91 minutes and will face either Alexei Popyrin or Jakub Mensik in the third round.

After starting well on serve, Sinner made the crucial breakthrough in the fourth game of the first set, converting his fourth break to take the lead in Rome.

Home favourite Sinner managed to serve out the set before also getting on top of Ofner's to start the second.

That one break in the second was all Sinner needed as he clinched victory, without giving away a single break point, at the first time of asking.

Elsewhere in the Italian capital, Nikoloz Basilashvili caused an upset as he defeated fifth seed Ben Shelton 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 in two hours and 20 minutes.

Felix Auger-Aliassime also suffered a shock exit, losing 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) to Mariano Navone.

Data Debrief: Sinner closing in on Djokovic's record run

Sinner has won his 29th consecutive match at ATP Masters 1000 events – since the format's introduction in 1990, only Novak Djokovic (31 and 30) has had a longer winning streak.

He is also the second player in the format's history to win his first 24 matches of an ATP Masters 1000 season, after Djokovic (2011 and 2015). Sinner is the first player to achieve the feat at the fifth event of the year.
