Scheffler credits grip change as key to Phoenix Open revival
Scottie Scheffler credited a change in his grip as key to his revival at the Phoenix Open, which ensured his streak of making the cut on the PGA Tour continued.
Scheffler, who last missed the cut at the 2022 FedEx St Jude Championship, recovered from a two-over 73 to card a six-under second round of 65 and get back in contention.
The world number one is at four under and still in with a chance of a 21st PGA Tour title, though he finds himself seven shots adrift of clubhouse leader Ryo Hisatsune.
Hisatsune leads from compatriot Hideki Matsuyama by one shot at 11 under, with the latter surging into the lead after reeling off six successive birdies on his front nine.
But Hisatsune roared back to register an eight-under 63, with his second round seeing him hole four birdies and an eagle between 13 and 17.
Scheffler has, however, won twice when trailing by more than two shots, including the 2022 Phoenix Open, where he made up nine shots for his first PGA Tour victory.
"I've always been a proponent of saying you can't really find it during tournament week, but I found a little something in my grip yesterday that seemed to really help me get my hands more securely on the club," Scheffler said.
"Struck it much better today. Felt a bit lost out there at times yesterday, so today felt better. Felt more in control of my game. You can obviously see that through the cleaner card."

And as a two-time winner at TPC Scottsdale, Scheffler understands better than most how quickly things can unravel around the course.
"Look at the start of the round for me. Front right pin on 1; it's down off the right; very tough pin. Next hole, it's almost a pin you can't get at, and it's these little things," he said.
"If you start chasing it out here, you're going to get behind it real quick. Maybe that is why I made so many mistakes yesterday."
Elsewhere, two-time Phoenix Open champion Brooks Koepka finished at two over to miss the cut in his second tournament since being reinstated by the PGA Tour.
Pierceson Coody and first-round leader Chris Gotterup are joint-third on eight under, one ahead of a pack that includes Matt Fitzpatrick and John Parry.
South Korea's Si Woo Kim shot the round of the day with a nine-under 62. He registered eight birdies and an eagle after starting his second round with a bogey.
