Young overcomes last-hole nerves to snatch victory at The Players Championship
Cameron Young overcame his last-hole nerves to snatch victory at The Players Championship over Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick on a thrilling final day at TPC Sawgrass.
Young overturned a four-stroke deficit in his final round, mixing five birdies with one bogey to post a four-under 68 and beat playing partner Fitzpatrick by just one shot.
The action heated up after Fitzpatrick himself had clawed his way back from five behind to lead with two holes to play after Aberg imploded on the back nine.
Aberg had an overnight lead of three shots but found the water in back-to-back holes at 11 and 12 on his way to carding 76, which saw him finish tied for fifth with Jacob Bridgeman and Sudarshan Yellamaraju at nine-under.
Young pulled level when Fitzpatrick bogeyed the 14th, only for the Englishman to hole a 15-foot birdie at the next, but the momentum swayed once again on the penultimate hole.
The American rolled in from 10 feet to add another birdie on the 17th hole, and the tide swung in his favour when Fitzpatrick found the trees with his tee shot on 18.
And from there, Fitzpatrick failed to recover as he missed an eight-foot putt to force a play-off, which allowed Young a simple tap-in par to finish at 13-under for the tournament.
"It is something we have worked on and this week coming into it you know it’s going to be like that if the wind blows at all this place is volatile," Young told NBC.
"We kept ourselves in a really good spot all day today, all week. The nerves kicked in over the eight-inch putt on the last.
"That hole looked really, really small there from pretty close range. So I am happy to have finished it off and just excited to have played the way I did.

"I got to see Matt [Fitzpatrick] hit the same wedge right in front of me [on 17]. So it was not as many nerves as a touchy-feely one would have been.
"In some sense, there is a bit of pressure off [after already winning on the PGA Tour] but the same pressure I've put on myself since being a kid is still there.
It's more a battle against that than not winning enough.
"To have put my name on two tournaments with the Players is incredibly special and I hope I can continue that throughout the season."
Victory is Young's second on the PGA Tour and first since last year's Wyndham Championship, which helped him move up to number four in the world.
