Jessica Pegula defeated Iga Swiatek to win the Bad Homburg Open on Saturday, denying the Pole a first career title on grass.

Swiatek reached the first grass-court final of her career with impressive victories over Victoria Azarenka, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Jasmine Paolini, but she came up against an opponent in sparkling form on Saturday.

Pegula hardly ever looked to be in danger throughout the one-hour, 46-minute affair, only facing one break point as she triumphed 6-4 7-5.

The top seed had to bide her time in both sets, breaking in game seven of the opener and game 11 of the second, but a clean display on serve kept Swiatek at arm's length.

Pegula turned on the style in the closing stages of both sets, and she took her first match point when a tired Swiatek backhand failed to beat the net chord.

Pegula will now turn her attentions to Wimbledon, where she is seeded third but has never previously gone beyond the quarter-finals.

Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto is Pegula's first-round opponent at SW19, while Swiatek will face Polina Kudermetova.

Data Debrief: Two from two for Pegula

While Swiatek was targeting a first career title on her least-favourite surface, this was Pegula's second final on grass, and she now has a 2-0 record in such matches.

Her other success on the surface also came in Germany, as she downed Anna Kalinskaya in the Berlin showpiece last year.

Pegula has now won three of her last four finals, having lost each of her previous three. The American still trails Swiatek 4-6 in the head-to-head between the players, but she has won four of their last six meetings.
