Taylor Fritz eased into the quarter-finals of the Halle Open with a straight-sets victory over Fabian Marozsan on Thursday.

Fritz, who is seeded fifth for the ATP 500 event in Germany, needed three sets to get past Zizou Bergs in his opening match, but things were more straightforward in the last 16.

He triumphed 6-2 6-4 in one hour and seven minutes, having only dropped one point on serve in the first set, which he clinched with back-to-back breaks in games six and eight.

The American looked set to run away with the contest when he broke again early in the second set, though Marozsan hit back in game five to get it back on serve.

It looked as though the set might go the distance, with Marozsan's improvement highlighted by a wonderfully crafted point that saw him drag Fritz to the net with a drop shot at the end of an extended baseline rally.

But a four-deuce 10th game resulted in Fritz getting another break to finish the job, converting his third match point.

He will face either Ben Shelton or Ethan Quinn in an all-American quarter-final, with French Open champion Alexander Zverev also lurking on the same side of the draw.

Fritz's grass-court momentum builds

Fritz claimed his 50th ATP-level victory on grass against Bergs in the first round, becoming only the third player born since 1990 to achieve that feat, after Daniil Medvedev and Milos Raonic.

And he produced a confident display against Marozsan, converting four of the eight break-point opportunities he created while only giving his opponent two such chances.

Fritz also won a remarkable 94% of his first-serve points (30/32), compared to Marozsan winning 67% of his (30/45).

The world number nine's 41 grass-court wins since the start of 2020 are the most on the ATP Tour, as he continues to build towards the start of Wimbledon on June 29.
