Lando Norris expects the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to push him close at the Mexico City Grand Prix, having secured pole position for Sunday's race.

Norris, who is 14 points behind his team-mate Oscar Piastri at the top of the Formula One Drivers' Championship standings, has a golden opportunity to eat into the Australian's lead.

While Piastri qualified in a lowly eighth, Norris will start at the front of the grid for the fourth time this season and the first since July's Belgian Grand Prix.

A final lap of 1:15.586 was enough for Norris to pip Leclerc and Hamilton to pole, with Mercedes' George Russell qualifying in fourth and Max Verstappen in fifth.

"I'm happy to be back on pole, it's actually been quite a long time, so it's a good feeling," Norris said.

"It was one of those laps where you don't really know what happened, it felt decent but when I crossed the line I was very pleasantly surprised.

"I've been feeling good all weekend, especially from today, I got a little bit nervous about the Ferraris at the end of Q3, but I pulled it out when it mattered. I'm happy because of that."

Norris has been on the podium 15 times in 2025. He could now become the sixth driver to achieve 16 or more in a single year in Formula One, after Hamilton (six occasions), Verstappen (three), Sebastian Vettel (twice), Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg (once).

Both he and Piastri have won nine times in F1 overall.

If either of them triumphs in Mexico, they will become the 36th driver to achieve at least 10 victories in the competition and the sixth to do so with McLaren after Ayrton Senna (35), Alain Prost (30), Hamilton (21), Mika Hakkinen (20) and David Coulthard (12).

Looking ahead to Sunday's race, Norris said: "I've had some good races here in the past so I will just focus on what I can control and that's all I can do.

"I'm here to win, I will be looking forward. I know I'm going to have some quick guys behind me and it's a long run down to turn one.

"The race pace from the Ferraris is usually very strong, I'm expecting a battle, and I'm not expecting it to be easy. Eyes forward, and I will see how much I can win by."
