Jamahl Mosley was fired as coach of the Magic on Monday less than 24 hours after Orlando lost Game 7 of its first-round play-off series to blow a 3-1 lead.

Mosley coached the Magic for the last five seasons and guided them to the play-offs in each of the last three - but each ended with a first-round exit.

The last was by far the most excruciating for Magic fans.

Eighth-seeded Orlando grabbed a surprising 3-1 lead over the top-seeded Detroit Pistons and was on the verge of reaching the Eastern Conference semi-finals for the first time since 2010, but was unable to close out the series.

Failing to win Game 6 at home may have been the loss that ultimately cost Mosley his job as the Magic squandered a 24-point second-half lead, scoring just 19 points after half-time in a 93-79 loss. Orlando's season then ended Sunday with a 116-94 defeat.

With 189 victories, Mosley is the third-winningest coach in Orlando franchise history behind Brian Hill (267) and Stan Van Gundy (259).

The Magic went just 22-60 in his first season in 2021-22 before finishing with a .500 record or better in each of the last three.

"We’re grateful to Jamahl (Mosley) for all he's done for the Orlando Magic," Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement. "We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family nothing but the best."
