Laver Cup: Fritz stuns Alcaraz to round off perfect day for Team World
Taylor Fritz inflicted a surprise straight-sets defeat on Carlos Alcaraz during a dominant second day for Team World at the Laver Cup.
Team World, who trailed 3-1 after day one, won all four matches in San Francisco on Saturday, with two points awarded for a victory, to take a commanding 9-3 lead heading into the final day.
Alcaraz was appearing in his first match since landing his second US Open title and, subsequently, returning to the top of the ATP rankings.
The Spaniard had won all three of his previous meetings with Fritz, but the American hit 17 winners and five aces on the way to a 6-3 6-2 victory – his first career triumph over a world number one.
"I think I take almost more pride in this one because I feel like, start to finish, I won it, I earned it," the world number five said.
"A lot of the decisive points in the match weren't so much him giving them to me – I felt like I made it happen in those moments. Just start to finish, I played an amazing match. I'm hoping this could be a sign of things to come."
Alexander Zverev was also beaten for Europe, with the world number three going down 6-1 6-4 against Alex de Minaur.
The Australian then teamed up with Alex Michelsen and enjoyed a 6-3 6-4 success in the doubles against Casper Ruud and Holger Rune, with the latter beaten 6-3 7-6 (7-5) by Francisco Cerundolo in the other singles showdown.
Team World now require just four more points on Sunday, when three will be awarded for a win, to lift the Laver Cup for only the third time in eight editions.
4 - Team World have won all four matches on Day 2 at the Laver Cup, this is only the third time a team has won all four matches in a day at this event after Team Europe on Day 2 in 2021 and Team World on Day 1 in 2023. Data Debrief: Record-equalling Fritz joins familiar company
It was only the third time in Laver Cup history that a team had won all four matches in a day.
Team World's leading points scorer in singles matches at the Laver Cup with 11, Fritz became the second player to defeat the world number one in the event after John Isner beat Rafael Nadal in 2017.
The American was appearing in his seventh singles match, equalling the Team World record set by compatriots Isner and Frances Tiafoe.
Meanwhile, in beating Zverev, De Minaur became the third non-American to claim multiple singles match wins for Team World, after Cerundolo and Felix Auger Aliassime.
Argentina's Cerundolo, who defeated Rune, was the first South American to claim a singles match win from day two onwards at the tournament.
Zverev's reverse, meanwhile, came in what was his 15th match at the Laver Cup, a tally only bettered by Jack Sock (16) since the event's inauguration in 2017.
