Kuldeep Yadav believes Shubman Gill will prove to be the perfect pick as India's new Test captain.

Gill has taken the armband ahead of the upcoming series against England.

The previous captain, Rohit Sharma, retired in May, with former skipper Virat Kohli stepping away from the longest format soon after.

Gill was given the nod to lead India, and Kuldeep backed him to be a success.

"Shubman knows how to lead a team," Kuldeep said, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

"He has worked under the seniors in the last couple of years. In the last one year, you'd have seen him in a lot of discussions with Rohit – not only in Tests but even in ODIs.

"I'm sure he has learned a lot, but as a leader, from what I have seen so far, he's very motivated and he's been playing an active role in lifting the team.

"I have seen over the last three-four sessions that Shubman has the same qualities that I've seen in our previous leadership groups. He's fully ready to lead us."

Kuldeep, who is inexperienced when it comes to playing in England, having made just one previous Test appearance in the nation, back in 2018, is spending time with fellow spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

Indeed, on the team bus, Kuldeep has been sitting next to his team-mate, filling a seat that Rohit previously occupied.

Kuldeep, though, was quick to stress he will never look to fill such big shoes.

He said: "I can never take Rohit's place. It's just that I'm spending a lot of time with [Jadeja]. [I'm looking to learn from] whichever senior player is there."

The first Test of the five-match series between England and India begins in Leeds on June 20.
