England dispatched Sri Lanka by 89 runs to kickstart their three-match ODI series in style at Chester-le-Street.

Will Jacks starred with both bat and ball, scoring an unbeaten 46 before producing career-best figures of 5-22.

Jacks took three wickets in the final over, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 176, way short of the target.

England won the toss and batted first in Durham, though they lost Tom Banton (10) in the third over, with Asitha Fernando (3-53) sending the opener's wickets tumbling.

Joe Root (44) and Ben Duckett (32) got England clicking through the gears, however, before the latter was pinned lbw by Dunith Wellalage (1-60) in the 11th over.

Yet Harry Brook delivered a captain's knock of 67 from 69 balls, guiding England to 182 by the time he succumbed to Dushmantha Chameera (1-61).

Jos Buttler scored a quickfire 31, but Jacks took centre stage, tallying up 46 from 47 deliveries to anchor the rest of England's innings and take the hosts to 265 all out, with Fernando and Sachindu Colombage (3-44) sweeping through the tail.

Gus Atkinson (1-25) took the early wicket of Kamindu Mendis (14) and Pathum Nissanka (27) was dismissed by Josh Tongue (1-23) in the 12th over. However, Kusal Mendis (42) was proving a nuisance until Jacks, who had already sent Charith Asalanka (1) packing, pegged him lbw in the 27th over.

Wellalage (45) offered some resistance, but his stand was ended in the 37th over by Jacks, who then took three wickets in the space of three balls to wrap up a big victory in style.

Jacks into England's ODI record books

That is now 10 white-ball wins in a row for England against Sri Lanka, who must now win at Headingley on Thursday if they are to claim victory in this series.

Should England win the second match, then it will be the third ODI series on the spin that they have won.

While Brook, Buttler and Root all delivered, Jacks was the star of the show, as he took the second-best figures by an English spinner in the 50-over format.

The only England spinner with better figures is Vic Marks, who took 5-20 against New Zealand in Wellington in February 1984.

"Outstanding player and he has been for many years now," Brook said of Jacks. "He has been a constant performer in franchise cricket. He has been an awesome player to have in the side."
