Mikel Arteta believes Max Dowman is "just not normal" after the 16-year-old became the youngest scorer in Premier League history in Arsenal's win over Everton.

The Gunners left it late to defeat Everton 2-0 at Emirates Stadium, with Dowman playing a crucial role in Viktor Gyokeres' goal in the 89th minute before scoring himself deep into stoppage time.

After Jordan Pickford went up for a corner in search of an equaliser, Dowman skipped past two challenges before finishing into an empty net.

At 16 years and 73 days, Dowman took the record that had been held by Everton's James Vaughan since 2005.

His goal means there's now been a Premier League scorer born in every year of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have scored more goals via substitutes than any other team in the Premier League this season (11), with both goals against Everton coming from the bench.

The Gunners moved 10 points clear of Manchester City, who face West Ham on Saturday, and Arteta heaped praise on game-changer Dowman.

"I had a gut feeling that this was a moment for him," the Spaniard told Sky Sports.

"It was a great moment, especially with the way the goal built up. We had 10 or 15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen.

"It was magical, all the bench and players together jumping up with the crowd, it was a beautiful day.

"He changed the game every time he got the ball. He made things happen and we looked like more of a threat.

"To do it at that age, in this context, with the pressure and expectations to win the game, it's just not normal.

"It's natural for him. He doesn't feel the pressure – that's the best thing. He does what he feels and when you have such a talent, I'm sure good things are going to happen."

Everton had chances of their own, with Dwight McNeil seeing a shot brilliantly blocked by Riccardo Calafiori before the Toffees winger struck the woodwork.

Beto also forced a smart stop from David Raya as Everton fell to their 94th Premier League defeat in London, with no side losing more away games in the capital than the Toffees.

Nevertheless, David Moyes took positives from the loss against the league leaders at the Emirates, as his team suffered their first defeat on the road since December.

"Totally gutted. We did such a good job for long period of the game," said Moyes.

"No disappointment in terms of our performance, the players gave everything, we just lost out in the final moments of the game.

"The block from Dwight McNeil from Calafiori is unbelievable. At the end of the game, they had more saves than Jordan Pickford. Moments like that didn't quite go our way."
