Ionescu: Liberty in control of their own destiny
The New York Liberty are in control of their own destiny after reaching the Commissioner's Cup final, so says Sabrina Ionescu.
Fresh from taking in the city's celebrations after the New York Knicks clinched their first NBA Championship since 1973, the Liberty claimed a win of their own on Sunday.
They swatted aside the Washington Mystics 86-64 to book their spot in the Commissioner's Cup final.
The Liberty won the Commissioner's Cup in 2023 and reached the final in 2024.
At least one of the teams that played for the Cup title have gone on to compete for the WNBA championship three times in the past four years, and while the Liberty will take nothing for granted, Ionescu knows they can control their own fate.
"If we keep playing the right way, taking it one game at a time, we're kind of in control of our own destiny," Ionescu said, as reported by The Athletic.
Ionescu returned to action after a seven-game absence due to a back injury.
In 26 minutes, Ionescu scored five points, provided three assists and added three rebounds.
Ionescu has now become the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 3,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists, doing so in 183 games, 60 fewer than the previous record holder.

"She was phenomenal," coach Chris DeMarco said.
"You could feel her presence out there. But it's hard sometimes when you're out for a while, you come back trying to find your game and I thought it was really good decision-making from her."
Jonquel Jones, meanwhile, feels the Liberty's progression through the Commissioner's Cup only bodes well for the future.
"It's a pretty high number of teams that go to the Commissioner's Cup championship that play in the Finals," Jones said.
Breanna Stewart added: "We're feeling a little bit more complete as far as having our whole roster.
"Now we're starting to build. Beginning of the season, we were trying to work through some things and just get wins when we could. This is like our Day One."
