Naomi Osaka has been forced to pull out of the Japan Open due to a leg injury.

The home favourite was set to go up against Jaqueline Cristian in the quarter-finals on Friday.

However, the 28-year-old sustained an issue while overcoming defending champion Suzan Lamens in the last 16, with Osaka in tears at times as she dealt with the pain.

And Osaka has now pulled out of the tournament, casting doubt over her participation in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week.

"We regret to announce that Naomi Osaka has not recovered from a left leg injury sustained during the second round of this tournament and has withdrawn from the quarter-finals scheduled for today," said a statement on the official Japan Open X account.

Osaka, a four-time grand slam champion and former world number one, has enjoyed a positive season, reaching the finals of the Auckland Open and Canadian Open.

Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, is the highest-ranked player remaining in the Japan Open, which concludes on Sunday.
