Alexander Zverev defeated Luciano Darderi in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open.

The first seed won 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-3) in two hours and 32 minutes at Flushing Meadows, with Botic Van De Zandschulp awaiting in the next round.

Zverev made a strong start against Darderi, winning each of the first four games on his way to taking the first set.

And the German won the second in identical fashion, despite Darderi saving six of the eight break points he faced, as Zverev went from strength to strength.

The third, however, remained on serve throughout before the tie-break, though Darderi did save four break points in the 11th game.

Nevertheless, Zverev prevailed in the tie-break, winning each of his points on serve before sealing victory with his first match point.

Zverev reaches half-century in 2026

Zverev's win over Darderi not only saw him reach the quarter-finals, but it also marked his 50th Tour win of the season.

Since the inaugural ATP Tour season in 1990, only five have achieved more 50-win seasons at ATP level than Zverev (seven) - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras and Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Zverev is enjoying a strong season, which saw him win a maiden grand slam title at the French Open. He also reached the final at Wimbledon and semi-final at the Australian Open.

Among players to begin their career in the Open Era, Zverev (29y 132d) is the third-oldest to reach all four grand slam quarter-finals in a season for the first time, younger than only Stan Wawrinka (2015) and David Ferrer (2012).

Zverev has also both won (28) and played (41) the most tie-breaks of any player at ATP level so far in 2026.
