Virat Kohli scored a superb century for Delhi on Christmas Eve while also breaking a List A record held by fellow India great Sachin Tendulkar.

Playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy – India's main 50-over competition – for the first time since the 2009-10 season, Kohli produced a fine innings of 131 from just 101 balls against Andhra in Bengaluru.

Kohli hit 14 fours and three maximums to help Delhi record a four-wicket victory, reaching their victory target of 299 with 74 balls to spare.

Veteran Kohli was supported with impressive knocks from Nitish Rana (77) and Priyansh Arya (74).

Delhi were able to get over the line despite a late wobble that was prompted by Satyanarayana Raju claiming Kohli’s wicket in the 33rd over.

They had been in cruise control at 274-2 but lost Kohli, Nitish, captain Rishabh Pant (five) and Ayush Badoni (one) in quick succession, before Harsh Tyagi (four not out) and Navdeep Saini (5 not out) saw the chase through to a successful conclusion.

Andhra had earlier scored 298-8 from their 50 overs after being put into bat, with Ricky Bhui hitting a fine 122 but seeing his team-mates restricted by a fine display with the ball from Simarjeet Singh (5-54), which proved crucial for Delhi.

Data debrief: List A record for Kohli

In his 330th List A innings, Kohli moved past 16,000 runs in the format (now on 16,130), passing Tendulkar (391 innings) to become the fastest men's player to reach the milestone.

The 37-year-old still has some way to go to catch Tendulkar’s overall List A run total, which is 21,999 runs from 538 innings.

Kohli and Tendulkar hold the top two spots in the list of the fastest players to reach 16,000 List A runs, followed by Gordon Greenidge (422 innings), Ricky Ponting (430 innings), Graham Gooch and Viv Richards (both 435 innings).

Gooch holds the overall List A record at 22,211 runs.

From Kohli's massive List A run total, 14,557 have come with India from 296 ODI innings.

He was Player of the Series in the recent 2-1 home victory over South Africa, scoring 131, 106 and 65 not out across three innings, and has now continued that fine form at domestic level.
