Serena Williams has denied that she is targeting a return to tennis.

The 23-time grand slam champion retired after the 2022 US Open, when she was knocked out in the third round.

However, on Tuesday, it emerged that Williams had filed the necessary paperwork for a return to the sport by re-entering the tennis anti-doping testing pool.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed she was back on the list of players registered, sparking widespread rumours that she could get back on the court.

But following the reports, she posted on social media: "I'm NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy."

Williams' name appears on the ITIA website's list of retired players. She would be able to return to a sanctioned event after making herself available for the out-of-competition testing for six months.

It is yet to be confirmed why she opted to ask for her name to be added to the testing pool.
