Swiatek beats compatriot Frech to start Wuhan Open campaign
Iga Swiatek kickstarted her quest for a first Wuhan Open crown by beating compatriot Magdalena Frech on Wednesday, securing a place in the round of 16.
Having come up short at the China Open last week, losing to Elise Mertens in the quarter-finals, Swiatek was in no mood to suffer a second straight defeat.
She registered a 6-1 6-2 victory over Frech, though to the lucky loser's credit, most of the games were drawn-out affairs as Swiatek needed one hour and 44 minutes to secure the win.
The tone was set in the very first game – a five-deuce contest – as Frech got an early break en route to a 2-0 lead, although Swiatek roared back to take 10 straight games.
That streak saw the world number one secure the opening set and establish a 4-0 lead in the second, though she was made to work on her own serve, with Frech passing up three break points in that span.
Frech did break to give herself a slither of hope at 4-1 in the second, but Swiatek immediately struck back to tee up a love hold for the match, and she remains on course for a potential quarter-final showdown with Aryna Sabalenka.
Before then, the six-time grand slam champion must overcome either Ashlyn Krueger or Lanlana Tararudee in the round of 16.
Iva Jovic and Jasmine Paolini were also straight-sets winners on Wednesday, with the former overcoming Dayana Yastremska and the latter beating Nikola Bartunkova, while Elina Svitolina outlasted Liudmila Samsonova 6-2 5-7 6-2.

Swiatek closes in on big 150, passes Williams
Swiatek's victory on Wednesday was her 149th at WTA 1000 events, surpassing Serena Williams (148) for the outright seventh-most in the format's 17-year history.
Those 149 victories are also the most any player has managed in their first 50 WTA 1000 tournaments (this is her 50th) since the format's 2009 introduction.
Even if including the old Tier I format, which ran from 1990 to 2008, only Martina Hingis (162) and Williams (153) managed more victories in their first 50 such events.
And, since the 2009 rebrand, Swiatek (92%, 46-4) holds the best win rate of any player in opening matches at WTA 1000 events (minimum 10 main-draw appearances).
