Heat acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo in long-awaited blockbuster
The Giannis Antetokounmpo speculation is finally over.
The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade franchise cornerstone Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for four players and five draft assets, multiple media outlets reported late Monday night.
The Bucks will receive Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks – including the No. 13 overall selection in Tuesday’s draft – one pick swap and a second-rounder.
The monster deal ends years of speculation about Antetokounmpo’s long-term future with a Bucks team that has been in gradual decline since winning the NBA championship in 2021.
The Heat and the Boston Celtics were Antetokounmpo’s preferred trade destinations, according to multiple media outlets. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics offered a package that was centred around 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.
Antetokounmpo is expected to sign a long-term contract extension with Miami once he is eligible in January.

4 years/$275M if he opts-out
3 years/$214M if he opts-in
The opt-in is slightly more lucrative
A two-time league MVP and 10-time All-Star, Antetokounmpo joins Bam Adebayo to form a fearsome frontcourt combination in Miami and joins the long list of stars recruited to the Heat by Pat Riley, including Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James.
The trade leaves the Heat with a projected starting line-up that includes Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, pending Wiggins’ $30.2million player option, and with Portis continuing in a sixth-man role.
Miami retained Nikola Jokić and Pelle Larsson but will have plenty of roster spots to fill, with Norman Powell entering free agency.
For Milwaukee, the soap opera is finally over, and the franchise can focus on rebuilding a younger core or players. The trade also began to replenish the Bucks’ depleted stash of future draft assets.
In addition to the No. 13 pick on Tuesday night, the Bucks also acquired unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, with Milwaukee betting that Antetokounmpo, 32, will decline into his late-30s.
Herro, a Wisconsin native, is the headliner for the Bucks after he has averaged over 20 points per game in each of the last five seasons and was voted to the 2025 All-Star roster.
Ware is an athletic center who has shown 3-point shooting range and is still developing at 22 years old.
Jaquez was a finalist for Sixth Man of the Year last season after averaging 15.4 points on 51% shooting, while Jakucionis, 20, is a 6-foot-5 guard who just finished his rookie season.
