Emma Raducanu conceded she has a "long way to go" as she joined Coco Gauff in exiting the Indian Wells Open early on.

While Gauff sustained a "scary" arm injury that forced her to retire from her clash with Alexandra Eala, Raducanu went down 6-1 6-1 to Amanda Anisimova.

Raducanu could not lay a glove on last year's Wimbledon and US Open runner-up, who triumphed in just 52 minutes.

"When I'm playing someone who's at the top like that, I think they have an extra 10 miles an hour on their serve than me," said Raducanu, who won only 21 points throughout the contest.

"If I'm not feeling it, that gap feels more evident in terms of weight of shot, in terms of power.

"You just feel a little bit behind and your punches aren't landing as much as theirs are.

"I need to obviously be aggressive when playing those players, but I think there's still a long way to go to be doing that and I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more."

Gauff, meanwhile, was forced to retire against Eala. The American was trailing 6-2 2-0 when she withdrew.

"It felt like a firework was going off inside of my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire," said the two-time major champion.

"As the match played, it got progressively worse, even on shots that I wasn't even using my left arm for."

Naomi Osaka beat Camila Osorio 6-1 3-6 6-1 to tee up a mouthwatering tie with Aryna Sabalenka, while Victoria Mboko progressed past Anna Kalinskaya and Jasmine Paolini beat Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5 5-7 6-1.

Data Debrief: Anisimova breaks new ground

Anisimova, who will face Mboko next, conceded her fewest games (two) en route to a victory over a grand slam champion. She previously conceded three against Raducanu (Montreal) and Gauff (Beijing), respectively, in 2025.

Gauff, meanwhile, retired from a match for only the second time in her career at WTA level, after doing so in Cincinnati in 2022 against Marie Bouzkova.

In the process, Eala became the first Filipino player to reach the last 16 at Indian Wells since the inception of the tournament.
