Coco Gauff reiterated her comfort on clay courts, after beating Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets to advance to the French Open quarter-finals.

The second seed prevailed 6-0 7-5 in a tale of two sets, having dominated the opener before she was made to work in the second.

The opening set lasted just 29 minutes as Gauff raced into the lead, dropping just five points across the first five games on her way to finishing with a bagel.

Alexandrova stood her ground in the second set, and after going a break down, she immediately responded to draw back level.

However, Gauff put together a three-game winning streak to take the set, converting match point on the second attempt.

"Overall, I thought I played great," she said following her victory. "She stepped up her game in the second set, she was hitting some balls right on the line."

Gauff arrived at Roland-Garros fresh from reaching successive finals on clay in Madrid and Rome, while she was also runner-up to Iga Swiatek here in 2022.

The American believes her style of play enables her to produce her best on the surface, despite winning all eight of her WTA Tour-level finals on hard courts (8-0), including the 2023 US Open.

"I'm very comfortable on clay, I think my results show that," she said. "It's the most physical surface, and I think that suits my game."

In getting to the last eight, Gaudd became the fourth-youngest player in the Open Era to reach five straight women's singles quarter-finals at Roland-Garros.

The 21-year-old is also the youngest player to reach five women's singles quarter-finals at a single Grand Slam event since Venus Williams at the US Open in 2001.
