West Indies captain Roston Chase hailed Justin Greaves' "Herculean effort", as his double-century helped them clinch a draw in the first Test against New Zealand.

The Black Caps set a target of 531 to win the opening match of the series, but the tourists made it clear on day four that they were going for a draw in Christchurch.

Shai Hope scored 140, putting on a 196-run partnership with Greaves, before falling to Jacob Duffy, and Tevin Imlach survived just nine balls before being trapped LBW by Zakary Foulkes.

However, a maiden double ton from Greaves, who finished on 202 not out from 388 balls, and a resilient unbeaten 58 off 233 deliveries from Kemar Roach helped the Windies secure a famous draw.

Only Gordon Greenidge (214 not out versus England in 1984) and Kyle Mayers (210 not out versus Bangladesh in 2021) have scored more runs in the fourth innings of a men's Test for West Indies away from home.

The West Indies' final total of 457-6 was also the second-highest score in the fourth innings of a Test, behind only England's 654-5 against South Africa in 1939.

Chase praised the efforts of Greaves, but did not forget about the vital knocks from both Hope and Roach.

"I feel lovely – first points on the board in the Test Championship," he said. "Herculean effort by Greaves, proud of him, proud of this moment for him and, obviously, Roach coming back into the team – he's a modern-day legend.

"After the tea interval, I thought we could push, but they batted normally, and we're happy with what the guys did. So much happened today that I forgot about Shai Hope; he's been in good form since the India tour.

"We know how great a player he is. I think it'll give us a lot of confidence; we know we can compete and win. If we could score a bit more – probably look at 280-300 in the first innings...and if we can turn up and get that lead early, it'll be great."

Player of the match Greaves added: "Special day for me and the team. Kemar, the senior pro, guided me all the way. "[Roach is] Legendary. He inspired me when I came into the Barbados team.

"[The] coach told me once you get in, stay in. To be a part of history is exciting, but for me, it's one day at a time.

"For us, it was just about getting into the last session – 100 runs in the last session – but losing Shai was a big thing for us."
