Hall of Fame basketball coach Don Nelson died at the age of 86 on Sunday.

The family issued a statement announcing his death that was posted to social media by NBA correspondent Marc Stein. A cause of death was not revealed.

"On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family," the family said. "Throughout his last week, friends and family encircled him with love, sharing the blessing of his friendship and revisiting treasured memories."

Nelson captured five NBA championships as a player with the Boston Celtics and won the NBA Coach of the Year Award on three occasions. His jersey No. 19 was retired by the Celtics in 1978.

Though he never won a title during his 31 seasons as a coach, his 1,335 career regular-season wins rank second only to Gregg Popovich with 1,390.

He began coaching in 1976-77 with the Milwaukee Bucks and retired following a second stint in charge of the Golden State Warriors in 2009-10. He also coached the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks, and his teams made 18 play-off appearances.
