Iga Swiatek’s hopes of completing a career Grand Slam were dashed after she was knocked out of the Australian Open by Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals.

The reigning WTA Finals champions won 7-5 6-1 in an hour and 36 minutes on Wednesday after a relentless serving display, which included 11 aces.

After the pair exchanged break points early in the first, both players looked comfortable on serve before Rybakina broke once more in the 12th game.

Rybakina was then at her aggressive best in the second, giving away just 13 points and breaking Swiatek’s serve twice before clinching the victory with her first match point.

Overall, Rybakina won 79.3% of her first serve points to Swiatek’s 60%, while the Kazakh also won 56.7% of her second serve points to the Pole’s 40%.

Rybakina will face Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals after she defeated fellow American Amanda Anisimova 6-2 7-6 (7-1).

Anisimova was visibly frustrated as she looked to reach the last four in a third consecutive grand slam, but Pegula proved to be too dominant for the 24-year-old.

Data Debrief: Rybakina rises to the occasion again

Rybakina claimed her eighth consecutive WTA top 10 win, the most of any player representing an Asian country since the tier format’s introduction in 1990.

She is also the first player to defeat Swiatek multiple times at a single grand slam event, also defeating the world number two at the Australian Open in 2023.

Meanwhile, after Elina Svitolina also reached the semi-finals with a win over Coco Gauff, two players aged 30+ (Pegula and Svitolina) have claimed multiple WTA top 10 wins at a grand slam event for the first time since 1990.
